 About the QEMRF

 
The Queensland Emergency Medicine Research Foundation (QEMRF) will support research directed at improving the care of patients in Emergency Departments and to develop Emergency Medicine research capacity in Queensland.

All grants are competitive and will be awarded to the applicants with the highest overall merit in consideration of the five core review criteria below:
  • significance to advancing emergency medicine;
  • investigative team;
  • innovation;
  • the approach including strategy, methodology and analysis; and
  • environment including resources and equipment.

Registration for Round 11 - Staff Specialist and Trainee grants are now open.  Please ensure you register your project so you receive an ID to use throughout the application process.  

 

 

There are seven QEMRF research funding schemes:
  1. Emergency Medicine Trainee Grants
    The Emergency Medicine Trainee Grants Scheme will support the costs of small research projects which may assist trainee’s with meeting fellowship requirements.
    Funding is available up to $20,000.  Eligible applicants are trainees doing 4.10.70 with appropriate academic supervisors (with a FACEM).  This Scheme has an open submission date and review will be conducted quarterly.
  2. Emergency Medicine Staff Specialist Research Grants
    The Emergency Medicine Staff Specialist Research Grants Scheme will provide seed funding to develop a project for project grant funding (from QEMRF or other national sources), or leverage additional funding from other sources (e.g. Australian Research Council linkage grant).  Funding is available up to $50,000.  Applicants are eligible staff specialists (with a FACEM).  This Scheme has an open submission date and review will be conducted quarterly.
  3. Project Grants
    The Project Grants Scheme will support larger research projects.  These grants could also contribute partial funding to a larger project which is seeking funding from alternative sources (potentially elsewhere in Australia) such as the National Health and Medical Research Council or the Australian Research Council.  Funding of up to $100,000 per year is available for a maximum of three years.  The Project Grants Scheme has one submission date a year and peer review will be conducted annually.
  4. Large Program Grants Scheme
    The Large Program Grants scheme will provide funding for significant bodies of work in which a number of separate but related projects could be funded as a cohesive program of work.  Funding of up to $250,000 per year is available for a maximum of three years.  The Program Grants Scheme has one submission date a year and peer review will be conducted annually.
  5. Leverage Funding
    Eligible Applicants who are making submissions for funding to other funding bodies, that meet the objectives of the foundation, may apply for leverage funding of up to $50,000 per annum for the term of the grant if it is awarded.
  6. Research Fellowship Scheme
    The Research Fellowship Scheme will provide funds to contribute to the salary costs of an appropriately qualified individual who is seeking to conduct research as part of their clinical position or work towards a higher degree.  There will be two levels of fellowships available.  The Research Fellowship Scheme has one submission date a year and peer review will be conducted annually. 
    Research Fellowship stipends will be reviewed annually by the Board of Directors.
    • Short Research Fellowship (Full-time or Part-time)
      This is a 6 - 12 month full-time (or 12-24 month part-time) position aimed at trainees or staff specialists.  Funding will be available to a maximum of AUS $150,000 per annum (full-time enrolment at the staff specialist Level) and is intended for people looking to gain both a qualification and experience in research. This fellowship is also applicable to eligible individuals who have already completed some research course work who may apply to complete further course work that would lead to a post-graduate qualification (eg Applicants who have completed two research subjects to meet their 4.10 requirements may obtain a Graduate Certificate of Public Health by completing two more courses).  Outcomes would need to include achievement of a relevant research-based qualification including a graduate certificate or graduate diploma in research.  The top-ranked applicant in this category will receive the Frank Garlick Fellowship in honour of eminent Queensland emergency medicine physician, Dr Frank Garlick.
    • Research Fellowship (Full-time or Part-time)
      This is a position for up to three years full-time (six years part-time) and is aimed at trainees or staff specialists. Funding will be available to a maximum of AUS $150,000 per annum (full-time enrolment at the Staff Specialist level) and is intended for people looking to gain both a qualification and experience in research. Outcomes would need to include a research-based higher degree (research based Masters, Professional Doctorate, PhD, DrPH or MD).
      The top-ranked applicant in this category will receive the Noel Stevenson Fellowship, in honour of eminent Queensland emergency medicine physician, Dr Noel Stevenson.
  7. Capacity Building Research Grant 
    Facilities can apply for a grant to build research capacity within their organisation up to $70,000 per annum for three years.
